President Biden declares major disaster for Oklahoma (1)

From Staff Reports

Federal disaster assistance is available to the state of Oklahoma to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by severe storms, including straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding, from May 19 through May 28, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Friday.

President Joe Biden’s action in declaring a major disaster for the state makes federal funding available to affected individuals in Blaine, Caddo, Custer, Delaware, Jackson, Mayes, Muskogee and Rogers counties. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster, according to a press release issued by FEMA late Friday.

Federal funding is also available to state, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency protective measures and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities in Blaine, Delaware, Mayes and Rogers counties, the release says.

Oklahoma tornadoes in 2024: A look at our coverage of storm damage this year

In April, Oklahoma experienced its first EF4 tornado since 2016, according to the National Weather Service.

At least 25 tornadoes were confirmed in the April 27 event, which resulted in four deaths — two in Holdenville, one near Marietta and one in Sulphur — and at least 100 injuries, authorities said.

About a week later, Barnsdall and Bartlesville were among places in Oklahoma hit by severe weather on May 6.

On May 25, two people died after a line of severe storms left tornado damage in Rogers and Mayes counties.
